Normally a fairly mild-mannered dude, Gray Maynard sounds a little bit fed up as he prepares to fight Frankie Edgar for the third time next weekend at UFC 136. As Maynard writes in a blog penned for Sportsnet.ca, he's tired of scrapping with this guy and tired of not getting the respect he thinks he deserves in the 155-pound division at large. Check out UFC Picks for UFC 136 and latest UFC Odds.
"I beat Edgar when we fought in 2008 as contenders on the way up, and I beat him even worse on New Year's Day for the belt, only for the judges to give it a draw," Maynard writes. "I've beat him twice and I still have to prove something against this guy? I still don't like talking crap about other fighters and competitors and I'm not going to do my worst Muhammad Ali impression to get a spotlight on myself. But, yes, it is frustrating I don't get the credit I feel I have earned ...
"I am going into this fight angry. Not angry at Edgar. Nothing personal with him, other than I need to beat him worse than ever to make sure everyone understands I am the best fighter at 155 pounds."
Fair enough, coming from a guy who has established a 10-0-1 record only to catch flack from fans for being a "boring fighter." One question though: Is it really the best thing for Maynard to approach this fight with Edgar -- one of the smartest and most adaptable fighters in the game -- with anything other than a clear head and absolute professionalism? Guess we'll find out. Also make sure you join NFL Picks this weekend and latest NFL Odds.
