Dana White tipped Zuffa's hand on what it is planning for Gilbert Melendez. Said White at the UFC on Versus 6 post-fight presser, "we do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over and we're looking at it right now. We're going to bring Melendez over ASAP. We're looking to bring him over now." Pretty straight forward after months of curves. Make sure you join UFC Picks this weekend.
So, it would appear that the Dec. 17 Strikeforce fight that was being planned will not include Melendez against Jorge Masvidal. If Melendez is brought over to the UFC "immediately," there are several high caliber match-ups for El Nino. One would be to give him Melvin Guillard if he beats Joe Lauzon this weekend in Houston. Guillard is already thought by some to be the No. 1 contender. The other would be to have Melendez square off with the winner of Clay Guida versus Ben Henderson, if they want to establish a true No. 1 that way. UFC Odds are up right now for UFC 136.
Yet the scenario that might make the most sense for the 155-pound Strikeforce champion is to have him face the winner of Gray Maynard/Frankie Edgar right away in a "unification" bout. In that scenario, Guillard (presuming he wins) could face the winner of Guida/Bendo in a title eliminator thereafter. Bottom line is the UFC already has a handful of deserving challengers ready for their title shot, but timing needs to be factored in. A fight between lightweight champions would be the biggest from an attraction standpoint, and here thinks that's the way they UFC is leaning, should they get through the contractual red tape and bring Melendez over.
