NFL Picks season is almost here. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Lions starting left tackle has sustained an injury to his pectoral muscle -- believed to be a partial muscle tear -- and his status for training camp is unclear. Such an injury can take a significant amount of time to rehabilitate -- Birkett notes that New York Giants wide receiver Steve Smith missed just four NFL Picks games with such an injury last season, whereas Denver Broncos sackmaster Elvis Dumervil missed the entire season; however, a team source described the injury as "not serious."
With Backus possibly on the shelf for the start of training camp at least, this will give more reps to the young Jason Fox, who saw action in just one game a season ago. If the injury is more severe than initially diagnosed, the team may also consider adding another more experienced option via free agency, as a number of worthy LT orphans are waiting for the lockout to end so that they can find new homes.
