UFC on Versus 4 Predictions
- How Nate Marquardt will beat Rick Story - Much has been made about Rick Story -- winner of six fights in a row and vying for positioning in the welterweight title picture -- jumping in to fight Nate Marquardt on a month's notice. There are two things to consider, though, to justify his reasoning for doing it.
One, Story came away from his dominant performance against Thiago Alves at UFC 130 Results injury-free and said immediately afterwards that he wanted to stay busy (remember, he was calling Fitch out). He is already in fighting shape, which helps, and in his career there have been pockets where he has fought as frequently as once a month over a 10-month span. But secondly, he is a wrestler with what he considers a good stylistic match-up here. For confidence in that area, he looks no further than to what fellow-wrestler Chael Sonnen did to Marquardt at UFC 109. Sonnen neutralized Marquardt and took away his offense with constant aggression, taking him down and pounding him out with increasing ease as the fight wore on. Story, a bright student in assessing susceptibilities, will likely follow that blueprint. Bet on UFC on Versus 4.
"Watching that fight Chael has a lot of the same style that I do or I'd have the same style as Chael," he recently said in an interview with Pro MMA Radio. "It shows some tendencies that Marquardt has and what happens when the pace is pushed against him and it's something that I can build confidence on." MMA Odds.
Though Story is making it known that Marquardt will have to overcome a dogged, aggressive wrestler, he also mentioned that he envisions knocking Marquardt out to put an exclamation point on his bid to the No. 1 contender in the welters. In other words -- and if you've seen him fight you already know -- Story isn't afraid to stand and trade, which means the smelling salts could end up under his nostrils just as easily.
