2011 Preakness Stakes Odds: Animal Kingdom Bred To Run Preakness Distance - Not since Affirmed did it in 1978 has a horse completed the Triple Crown sweep, but after finishing first in this year’s Kentucky Derby all of the talk has been about Animal Kingdom heading into the 2011 Preakness Stakes betting race. Trainer Graham Motion has talked about the sole focus being the horse’s run in the upcoming race at Pimlico Race Track, and with so much that can change in the two minutes it takes to run the race that won’t change until the third Saturday in May is through. There will be no rematch between Animal Kingdom and rival Nehro after those horses finished one-two at Churchill Downs, and that has left the Kentucky Derby winner as the lone favorite heading into the Preakness.
The product of Leroidesanimaux and Dalicia, Animal Kingdom has found its legs as a three-year old after finishing first and second in a couple of MSW races as a two-year old. The Derby winner broke its three-year old maiden by finishing second at the AlwOC behind Powhatan County, but looked even better in its next race when it finished first at the Spiral Stakes-G3. Animal Kingdom ran that 1 1/8 mile race in 1:52:32, but wasn’t considered among the Preakness Stakes Odds favorites to win this year’s race at Churchill Downs. Once again, Motion oversaw solid workouts in the weeks leading up to the first Saturday in May, and when his horse took its post he had the feeling that something big was very possible. That’s why he wasn’t surprised when Animal Kingdom beat out Nehro and Mucho Macho Man for the Kentucky Derby win at 1 ¼ mile, holding on from a late challenge after pulling far ahead through the first 1 1/8 mile in the same fashion that it had at the Spiral Stakes.
Animal Kingdom will now be tested once again by what is expected to be a full field of 14, only the third time since 1991 that a full field will have been entered. Motion has told reporters that his only concern heading into the sports betting bonus race is the possibility of drawing the rail position, as no trainer wants to see his horse start on the inside. That sentiment was echoed by the Team Valor International brass as most owners would prefer to see their horse start on the outside with only 14 horses running in the Preakness, compared to the 20 that go in the Derby. Post position will be huge for the success of whatever horse wins the Preakness, and horse racing fans would love to see Triple Crown Odds hopes kept alive with another big victory. The onus in on Animal Kingdom after it’s Kentucky Derby win, but it will need to beat some familiar rivals in third-place Derby finisher Mucho Macho Man and fourth-place finisher Shackleford to get the job done. Animal Kingdom was born to run the 1 1/8 mile distance, and may actually look stronger in a shorter race. 2011 Preakness Stakes Odds: Animal Kingdom Bred To Run Preakness Distance.
